11 Things not to do When you Visit Bangkok

Bangkok- a hub of tourist attractions, the place of golden Buddhist temples, China town, special massages and the famous (or not so famous) Patpong red light district, lures holiday lovers from all over the world. Even though you will find that most of the urban Bangkok is like being in a never-ending party, there are however some faux pas which are best kept in mind.

There are many blogs and reviews which guide you to explore the city’s limits. However, we give you a list of things you must not do when in Bangkok! Read to know how you can explore the city like a true local and plan your trip.

1. Litter
Even though Bangkok is not one of the cleanest cities in the world, you will still find Police around who will fine anyone who litters in the city. Keep that cigarette bud in the empty beer can and find a trash can if you want to save the money for other pursuits!

2. The TukTuk deal
The TukTuk ride is a spot on Bangkok experience but beware of being tricked by the humble vehicle drivers! Do not fall prey to TukTuk drivers who ask for cheap rate for a whole day or simply stalk you. Usually the drivers have a deal with restaurants and shops and may just cost you more time. Your best bet is to hunt down a TukTuk who will not force you to sightsee places of no interest!

3. Talking about the Royal Family
If you speak of the Royal family in a disrespectful way you can be put behind bars for up to 15 years! Sightsee all the wonders of Bangkok and see the royal palace, a much better replacement to talking!

4. Shopping Recklessly
Shopping at Bangkok can get a little tricky since you may never know the difference between originals and fakes. If it helps, ask for a guarantee card and you must feel a slight relief! The prices are also often over the top and bargaining skills are a must when in the city especially if you are shopping at local markets.

5. Rely on Word of Mouth Information
As much as the people are helpful in Bangkok, do plan your own trip and decide which are the most popular places to visit in the city beforehand. Beware of visiting attractions on local word of mouth. What is famous in Bangkok is famous on the internet too!

6. Avoid Peak Hour Traffic
The Peak hours in Bangkok are full of traffic jams with TukTuks, Cars, Rickshaws and bikes. If you find a Taxi on meter, the prices will almost double in heavy traffic. Use Skytrainand the MRTMetro/subway to reach far off places.

7. Wrong Clothes
As much as Bangkok is a tourist hub, do try to wear modest clothes when you visit temples, invitations or simply while sightseeing.Wearing black clothes to auspicious ceremonies including visiting temples or family occasions is considered a social faux pas.

8. Sitting on the Reserved Seats
Public transport in Bangkok has reservation for Buddhist Monks and as tempting as it is to sit on a reserved seat, you will be better off trying to grab a seat for the unreserved passenger!

9. Massage Parlors
Budget massage parlors pop all around the city and in hands of a not-so-legit masseuse, you are bound to expect week long body ache. Spend a few more Baht to get a good massage.

10. Local Beliefs
The head is considered a sacred body part and touching anyone’s heador passing something over someone’s head will raise a few eyebrows for sure. Here’s another heads up- feet are considered unclean and hence footwear is always left outside while visiting someone at their home or entering temples. You may also plan your vacation in Bangkok through Bangkok trip planner.

11. PDA
As much as the urban Bangkok is relaxed, very rarely will you find couples showering their adoration on each other and kissing. If you are travelling here, save the intimate gestures for hotel rooms.

Bangkok all summed up is one hell of an experience. And whether you find it crazy, simplistic, religious or outrageous, you just cannot be a stranger to its charm.

Best Things to do in Goa in December

December can be a great time to visit Goa as it offers you an opportunity to escape the humidity and hot temperatures that envelope this state otherwise. Taking those long walks on the beaches of Goa can be a memorable experience. With a number of Goa’s tourist attractions shrouding a different colour, this state can be an awesome place to roam around. There are many things to do in Goa in December that can simply fill up your trip planner. Let us see what they are:

1. Take long walks along beaches

It has to start with beaches! While beaches in North Goa steal the limelight, South Goa beaches are less crowded. Arossim and Utorda beaches, near the town of Majorda are the best South Goa beaches. For North, Baga, Calangute and Anjuna are the best. Water sports on these beaches include jet skiing (water scooter as we know it), parasailing (the view from the top is worth it), scuba diving and falling from a banana boat (most adventurous of the lot). To make the best of your beach experience, book yourself a room in one of the best resorts in North Goa. These beaches will be bustling with visitors in the month of December.

2. Visiting Old Goa

History comes alive in Old Goa. Panjim - the state capital for the better part of three centuries and known as the ‘Rome of the East’ has number of churches, convents, museums, art galleries, government buildings, bungalows and bakeries together make it tough to suggest what to not see in South Goa. Yet, Basilica of Bom Jesus (for its architectural magnificence) and Sé de Santa Catarina (largest church in Old Goa) are the most visited ones. Not to forget, Old Goa is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Famous Market of Ingo

Fondly known as Ingo’s Saturday Night Bazaar, this market in Arpora is open for about six months of winter and presents a potpourri of junk jewellery, imported T-shirts, hippie merchandise, Indian and global cuisine from Rajasthan and Kashmir to Turkey, Spain and the rest of Europe! For non-shoppers, Daniel’s Bar often sees a DJ playing there, for the market. Even without this, music plays throughout the day and gets groovier by the night.

4. Dolphin Drive

A dolphin cruise in Goa is always exciting for the old and the young alike. Dolphins pepping out of the sea around your boat in a graceful motion is best savoured by eye and saved on camera. The dolphin cruise trip is flanked with a day-long tour of Grand Island, ideal for a peaceful picnic.

5. Great time at Beach Shacks

Beach shacks have always been one of the major Goa’s tourist attractions. Once the sun sets behind the sea, the Beach shacks in Goa get livelier by every minute. Picture this, tables with candle-lamps and beach chairs by the water with live music or karaoke performances in the background. The delicious seafood or vegetarian dishes wash down well with anything from local beer to wine.

6. Have fun with wild ones

Goa has way too many sanctuaries and national parks to explore. Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park are a few places to visit in the month of December with the help of vacation planners.

7. Martin’s Corner

Near Majorda in South Goa is Betalbatim, a small village with a famed restaurant, called Martin’s Corner, Sachin Tendulkar’s favourite restaurant. The food here is legendary. King crabs, prawn vindaloo, garlic chicken and sea food that is mixed with sauces and spices. These are just some of the reasons why celebrities, locals and tourists flock to Martin’s Corner.

8. Take the Mandovi River Cruise

Moonlight or sunset, whatever you prefer for a cruise ride, here is your chance. Also, there is a waterfall nearby!

9. Meet interesting people

Indians or firangs, Goa is the place where you let go of all your inhibitions and simply celebrate. And who knows, you might just get lucky!

10. Party until morning

No neighbours to stop you, no cops howling over post midnight. It's Goa, parties start after midnight especially on New Year’s Eve. You don't want to be a party-pooper and not go, do you?
